Ruth Roman (n e Gold) was born at Lynn in Massachusetts. Her parents were Lithuanian Jewish Mary Pauline and Abraham Roman. Ruth was a small toddler when her father who was a carnival barker died. Her mother was forced to take on jobs like waitressing, cleaning and washing. Ruth went to school in the tenement district of Boston's most deprived. However, she was only in school for a couple of years, then leaving to pursue her acting career. It was a difficult path to pursue. Although she got an opportunity at a theatre in New York posing as a still for a mystery magazine however, there were no theatre opportunities that came her way. After a brief stint as a club hat girl, she decided to return to her home in Massachusetts and leave her position. There, she made ends meet as an usherette in the morning, while working at night with the New England Repertory Company, her first regular acting gig. She took classes in drama at The Bishop-Lee Theatre School and graduated.
